Sometimes I decide to craft a list which turns out to be an impossible task. Like this one. When I go through the R.E.M. catalog I am reminded how many great songs they recorded, songs which I had forgotten. Whittling them into a top ten list is like trying to pick up mercury with your fingers. Then when you eventually do come up with ten songs ranking them equates to pure insanity.
Much like the Beatles list this particular one is highly susceptible to change. There are at least 30 other songs which could’ve made it – and probably would at a different moment in time. But we’re in this moment. For whatever that’s worth.
10) The One I Love
9) Mine Smell Like Honey
8) It’s the End of the World as We Know It
7) At My Most Beautiful
6) Strange Currencies
5) Imitation of Life
4) Electrolite
3) Radio Free Europe
2) Fall On Me
1) Everybody Hurts
Cheap post? More like a provocative post – you left out Undertow, and Low Desert and E-Bow the Letter! But as you so well say, picking up mercury . . . 🙂

E-Bow the Letter was on then off then on then off then on then off this very tough list.

When I read your title, my first thought was r.e.m has 10 songs?? After reading your list, I stand by my first thought. I’ve only heard a couple of these songs, so I must be listening to a different radio station. I’ll have to give the other songs a listen.
