About a month ago a new irregular segment was introduced where I give snap reviews of ten totally random movies. The rules are simple. Reviews can only consist of one sentence not exceeding 20 words. The rating system is the widely used 4 star one, with ½ star increments. After posting I’ll add each new entry on the “Shorts” page listed above. Not much more to say other than here are today’s selections.
Airport ’77 (1977) – Disaster film in more ways than one with lots of old movie stars trying to chew non-existent scenery. (1½)
Cedar Rapids (2011) – Quiet slice of life movie about regular guy thrust into unusual circumstances I generally find very appealing. (3½)
Easy A (2010) – Man, that Emma Stone is some kind of actress. (3)
Baby Boom (1987) – Guilty pleasure finds discarded NYC executive unexpectedly raising a child in rural Vermont. (3)
Almost Famous (2000) – Aspiring 15 year old rock music journalist’s adventures with B-level rock band and pitch-perfect “Band Aid” Kate Hudson. (4)
Glitter (2001) – Amazingly, an unbelievable story, terrible script, bad direction and wooden chipmunk-cheeked Mariah Carey does not achieve “camp” gold. (½)
Casino (1995) – Fair-to-middling Scorsese retread combining elements of several of his past films set in a different location. (2½)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) – It’s corny, dated and idealistic, but still appeals to our dim hope for a just legislative government. (4)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) – Much more than a martial arts exercise, this wonderful film glides along on a sense of duty and suppressed emotions. (4)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – The ONLY way to be able to sit through this thing is at a midnight show with crazed devotees. (3½ – midnight show in theater) (1 – anywhere else)
You know what’s a great Christmas movie? A Christmas Story. You know what’s a Christmas movie that I am absolutely sick of? A Christmas Story. It’s still really good, don’t get me wrong, but when you’ve seen a movie 10487171247368 times, you just… you don’t want to see it anymore.
But 10 or 15 times is fine. The F dash dash dash word.

Okay, I suck at picking movies, but I love anything with Bill Murray in it. Scrooged is my favorite holiday movie, EVER…but, then again I watch Die Hard every CHristmas Eve, so…you can’t go by me!

Well heck, Die Hard is a Christmas movie, although not in the traditional sense!

I’ve honestly only seen Casino from your list. I thought it was not the greatest but still would have given it a 3 star rating..(not opposing you – just sharing my opinion)…I really thought Good Fellas was cool..but, I have no idea who directed it. (it seemed similiar in ways to Casino).

Scorsese did also direct Goodfellas, so it’s not surprising you saw similarities with Casino. My rating – which was based entirely on what I was feeling as I typed the post – was probably impacted by the fact Scorsese has done similar things in the past, but in a much better way. At least that’s what I think, but no one from Hollywood is knocking on my door asking for my opinion!

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington- great great movie, even though it IS dated.
And I’m finding out at work that I am surrounded by Rocky Horror fans. Very strange, this is.

Those Rocky Horror heads are a unique bunch, no doubt about it. Time Warp, baby!

I give Cedar Rapids 4 stars. It was one of the funniest movies I saw this year and I see lots of movies.

Wow. I’m gonna check out Glitter now just to see if it really deserves a rating that low.

It could’ve been a camp classic, but they couldn’t even get that right.
