When I’m tooling around with a camera it’s pretty tough to catch Red in an unguarded moment. She has a sixth, seventh and eighth sense which alerts her when I’m pointing my camera in her direction. The result? She assumes a variety of amusing (if quite affected) poses. She’s perfected the gang sign pose, the incredulous pose, the cheesy smile pose, the pouty pose and a several others which I can’t rightly describe. The countless stockpiled photos of her demoing these various “looks” are, of course, precious to me. However, the photos which I most treasure are Read the rest of this entry »

A 42 year-old woman in the Netherlands was recently arrested for stalking her 62 year-old ex-boyfriend. The charge alleges she phoned him 65,000 times over the course of a year. This figure was determined after police seized her cell phone and computer and their techies performed whatever voodoo they do to extract this type of information. When confronted with this total she claimed 65,000 calls were not excessive. Interestingly enough, the man claimed Read the rest of this entry »

the 4/10

Starting today Utah eliminated its experimental 4/10 (days/hours) work schedule for state employees. Utah was the first (and so far only) state to try this and found, surprisingly enough, shutting down most state services on Fridays did not sit well with their citizens. Implementing the 4/10 in such a way that would’ve allowed important services to remain open Monday through Friday might have been Read the rest of this entry »

I serve on the Board of my community Association. I’m generally not a joiner so it’s surprising that seven years down the road I’m still at it. When I initially became involved I was unemployed and motivated by two things. (1) The need to expand local networking options. After schlepping to Manhattan for 14 years I had no desire to resume that commute and, being relatively new to the area, I hardly knew anyone. (2) Shortly after Read the rest of this entry »

One unmistakable social change over the past decade is the proliferation of photography. Thanks to digital technology we have smartphones with cameras, pocket-sized point and shooters, and DSLRs. Many purists also still use film cameras. This technological leap has made it extremely Read the rest of this entry »

putt putt

My friend Tony posted a comment on Facebook saying he needs a new putter. I assume he’s referring to a golf club, the one called a “putter”. It’s unlikely he’s in search of a person to actually putt the ball for him once he gets it on the green. If that were the case I’d have to chide him about his lack of clarity. The proper thing to say would’ve been, “I need a surrogate putter”. But Tony’s a smart guy, so I’m pretty sure he meant the golf club.

Golf is not a passion of mine. It’s never even reached passing fancy stage. That’s not to say I’ve never played. The thing I found most difficult was Read the rest of this entry »

It’s a quiet evening. The sun has set and a faint hint of autumn is in the air. Crickets are cricketing. I’m munching on Halls Honey and Lemon Cough Drops. Not because I have a sore throat, mind you. I just like the taste. My mind drifts in the hope something of moderate interest will pop up, something I can share with you fine folks. I look to my left and see the silent television and cache of DVDs. I look to my right and note Read the rest of this entry »

We’ve all imagined a glamorous life on the underbelly of the law if, for no other reason, to spice things up. It’s not just me, right? It seems a common enough fantasy. Plan and execute a brilliant caper (victimless, of course) that will reap untold riches and rewards in the form of uncut, easily fenced jewels without any of the nasty blowback associated with getting caught, arrested and prosecuted. Especially right before a holiday weekend.

As horrifying as thought of getting caught is, the specter of jail time is what actually Read the rest of this entry »

We recently went to England, more specifically West Yorkshire, on holiday. It was our second extended trip there since October and I’m quite certain not our last. With family living in Ilkley, a small, somewhat prosperous town smack in the middle of Brontë Country, we’re pretty much rooted there. You know Brontë Country. Windswept moors. Narrow, steep footpaths. Hard earned wisdom seeping Read the rest of this entry »

The interwebs, man they fill our little minds like tithers fill the coffers. They expand our lives in so many ways it would be futile to try to count ‘em. Just think of all the information floating around in the netherworld waiting to be snatched by our dancing fingertips, much like a wallflower sits glued to a rickety wooden chair silently waiting for a dance. Certainly a lot of stuff bouncing about out there reveals new depths of Read the rest of this entry »
