“You know how it is when you go to be the subject of a psychology experiment, and nobody else shows up, and you think maybe that’s part of the experiment? I’m like that all the time.” – Steven Wright

I have taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test several times over the course of my working life. This test is designed to identify how you perceive the world and, as a result, function within it through psychological preferences. Ideally it will help you understand Read the rest of this entry »

Ed. Note: Sifting through the boxes and boxes of artifacts discovered in the attic of Trask Avenue we continue to be surprised. While a lot of the material is admittedly trivial (set of 3 stained Rheingold cardboard coasters; vinyl copy The Archies fourth LP, “Sunshine”; child’s rusted sled from a company named Rose something; 1988 Chris Speier baseball card) occasionally we stumble across something of enduring interest.

The Beatles officially announced their break-up in the spring of 1970. Although many people considered John Lennon the political and social voice of the band, apparently Ringo Starr was the one who wanted to affect real change. He seriously considered running for Prime Minister in the June 1970 election. This despite the fact he Read the rest of this entry »

The holiday season fades away. We’re speeding headfirst into January and the heart of winter. As such I can now reveal the sad and deplorable truth: Our Christmas tree is a shambles, a droopy mess, a meager and utter disgrace to the mighty tradition of Christmas trees worldwide. If our Christmas tree were a movie it would be Glitter without the glitter, Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo without the incisive social commentary, Little Fockers without Read the rest of this entry »

I wandered into an old book store. Walking towards the back I saw a handwritten sign pointing to “The Red Chair Room.” Who could pass up something like that? Not me. But as is often the case the reality differed from the promise. It wasn’t a room. It was more of a nook, but why quibble? After all there was a red chair and for that most anything can be forgiven.

She said meet her at the stairs. Meet after the bars closed, after the last street wanderers slipped away into the night.

She said meet her at the stairs. Meet at the only place in this pitiful excuse of a city that reminds her of that romantic European spot, the place it started all those years ago.

She said Read the rest of this entry »

For a while now books have pushed hard against the boundaries of the house, threatening to burst through the walls in search of more space. It’s not the first time I’ve been through this. Most of my life has been crowded with books, although for a brief period I enthusiastically ran in the other direction.

About ten years ago I was possessed with a newfound desire to adopt a minimalistic lifestyle and living space. I craved air and light. I required clean lines and Read the rest of this entry »

Merry Christmas!

Here’s wishing everyone in Blogland and beyond a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season! Live well, be happy and visit the lonely. 🙂

I joined Facebook in 2008. Like most neophytes I found it pretty alluring. Reconnect with long lost friends! Play free games! Announce my “status” to the world! Discover which superhero I was just by answering a few questions! It was intoxicating, especially to a social media virgin. (Full disclosure: I briefly boarded the clunky My Space train years earlier, but quickly hopped off at the first exit. Who is Tom and why is he already my friend?)

As the newness luster dulled and the rose tint faded from my eyes it became clear Read the rest of this entry »

Did you ever notice when you reach a certain age it’s much more common for a name to drop off your holiday card list rather than make its way onto it? I find my list shrinks every year, if only by tiny increments. It’s a curious thing. There was a time everyone, and I mean everyone, who occupied space in my life at that moment received a card. I guess simply knowing that many people was Read the rest of this entry »

Radio City Music Hall

If you ever get the chance to go to New York City during the Christmas season make an effort to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. Having grown up within 10 miles of the City I was lucky enough to attend this extravaganza several times as a kid. Generally, a Christmas movie would be shown followed by Read the rest of this entry »
