One of the cushiest jobs in the world is Advice Columnist. Seriously, does it get any easier? You encourage people to write to you about their problems. Then you tell them how you think they should address those problems. If that wasn’t fantastic enough, you get a large distribution network to pay you for the privilege of letting them publish your opinions. Let’s be real. That is the dream for (more…)

Mercy me, stigma is a difficult and lonesome burden. Even after all these years the good people of the great commonwealth of Massachusetts and across this God-fearing nation still believe I murdered my father and step-mother. They do not know or do not remember I was acquitted of all wrongdoing by 12 respected New Bedford men after only 90 minutes of jury deliberation. Acquitted. I know not why people fail to (more…)

This week’s Trifextra challenge is to write a piece between 33 and 333 words using the three words listed below. The words must each appear in the piece in the order given.

Good old Benjamin Franklin, now there was a man with a plan. At the age of 20 young Ben decided to give his life some moral structure and devised “13 virtues” to help develop and improve his character. Pretty heady stuff for a 20 year old, right? At 20 I was still mixing reds and whites in my college laundry and then wondering why my underwear came out pink. All I’m saying is I could’ve used guidance. (more…)

Welcome to your American Experience, child. It holds great promise. Enjoy yourself, but know that your life comes with my expectations. Embrace the freedom to do what you want. However, above all else remember your ultimate purpose – to (more…)

On Saturday I watched Bruce Springsteen’s March 15th keynote address from the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas. He said a lot, but one thing in particular intrigued me.

“We live in a post-authentic world. Today, authenticity is a house of mirrors. It’s all just what you’re bringing when the lights go down.”

Contextually he was speaking about music, but the descriptor “post-authentic world” is reflective of a broader societal shift. Nowadays it is far more difficult to separate real from fake, sheen from substance. It takes work. Reality is constantly being distorted and thanks to (more…)

I like to refer to New Jersey as “Our Little Secret” because of its surprising diversity and beauty. Of course if you don’t live here you can’t call it that. You’ll have to find something else to (more…)

Time for the Trifextra weekend challenge: Write a story entitled ‘Lost’ in exactly 33 words. The word ‘lost’ can only appear in the title, not your 33 words. And away we go! (more…)

Jimmy sat on the bench in Union Square, his bench, keeping alert. He could spot them streaming through the park – the suburbanites hustling to make their escape from gray reality of the city to the warm, muted colors of home. He’d always pick out a few who would toss (more…)
