Good old Benjamin Franklin, now there was a man with a plan. At the age of 20 young Ben decided to give his life some moral structure and devised “13 virtues” to help develop and improve his character. Pretty heady stuff for a 20 year old, right? At 20 I was still mixing reds and whites in my college laundry and then wondering why my underwear came out pink. All I’m saying is I could’ve used guidance. (more…)

Spring brings a change in attitude. Some folks feel a lifting of the spirit, a loosening of the depressive chains brought on by winter’s short days and cold weather. Others anxiously anticipate the blossoming of trees and plants, the renewal of nature’s life cycle. Children begin to sense the possibilities of summer and no school. Baseball fans embrace misplaced hope, convinced this will be the season their team finally wins. Everything blooms (more…)

It’s time to get musically graphic, folks.

Earlier today the venerable Anagram King posted this new variation of a viral thingy from a few years ago. It’s a simple, creative and fun diversion, especially when all your writing ideas are still gestating. Create a fictional cover for a fictional album by a fictional band! So let’s all play along, shall we? All you have to do is follow these simple steps. (more…)

The interwebs are such a rich source for comedic gold. You could easily laugh away days thanks to the creativity of others. Of course the difficulty is finding these gems. Often it’s pure luck. You stumble across a video or a written piece which makes the coffee shoot right out of your nose. Well, I’m here today to save you the trouble of wading (more…)

Displeasure with personal appearance is certainly not a recent phenomenon, although at the rate we’re consuming every edible consumable within reach it’s easy to think it is. Throughout history all cultures have latched onto various forms of trickery and illusion to enhance the attractiveness of the human body which, let’s be honest, is needed by (more…)

When I first shuttled off to college handshakes suddenly turned into complicated rituals which, executed properly, might allow entry into the Club of Cool. College prep courses did nothing to prep me for this. Up to that point a handshake was straightforward. It was only initiated by adult men, men who held real jobs, jobs which never involved (more…)

The holiday season fades away. We’re speeding headfirst into January and the heart of winter. As such I can now reveal the sad and deplorable truth: Our Christmas tree is a shambles, a droopy mess, a meager and utter disgrace to the mighty tradition of Christmas trees worldwide. If our Christmas tree were a movie it would be Glitter without the glitter, Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo without the incisive social commentary, Little Fockers without (more…)

I joined Facebook in 2008. Like most neophytes I found it pretty alluring. Reconnect with long lost friends! Play free games! Announce my “status” to the world! Discover which superhero I was just by answering a few questions! It was intoxicating, especially to a social media virgin. (Full disclosure: I briefly boarded the clunky My Space train years earlier, but quickly hopped off at the first exit. Who is Tom and why is he already my friend?)

As the newness luster dulled and the rose tint faded from my eyes it became clear (more…)

I’m sitting here enjoying the menthol goodness of a Halls Honey and Lemon Cough Drop. Its magic must be working because even the New Jersey air feels refreshing. Mind you, I don’t have a stuffy nose, cold or cough. I’ve previously mentioned somewhere my peculiar fondness for these delightful little OTC candies. Because that’s what they are to me. Candy. Some folks (more…)

Here we are. The year is quickly winding down and I still haven‘t done 90%* of my holiday shopping. I should hop on that soon, don’t you think? But there’s more to consider other than enforced spending. Britney Spears turning 30. Herman Cain bowing out of the presidential race. My cold hands. I’m telling you, it’s difficult to focus on one thing. When you add that 2012 is less than a month away…well, systems start (more…)
